Aid transparency: a top priority for Obama and Cameron

  • May 26, 2011

During a State Visit to the UK, U.S. President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron issued a Joint Fact Sheet: The U.S.-UK Partnership for Global Development. “Aid Effectiveness – Accountability, Transparency and Results” was identified as one of six priority areas, and the document states:

“…we must be open, transparent and accountable in how we are spending our taxpayers’ money … In so doing, we will help individuals understand the results being achieved, provide developing countries a stronger voice, and encourage other donors to follow our lead.”

Looking ahead to the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in November 2011, the leaders committed themselves to ensuring that this meeting “transforms the way that bilateral aid is delivered around the world.”
