How to create your IATI organisation identifier

The steps listed here should ensure that your IATI organisation identifier (also known as your IATI "org ID") is unique and will be approved by the IATI Secretariat. The identifier is made up of two parts based on the agency your organisation is registered with and your registration number.

Identify your registration agency

The first part of your identifier will be your organisation’s registration agency code.

A list of registration agencies can be found at: org-id.guide. Check whether your organisation is registered with one of the agencies on this list. If it is, use the agency code as the first part of your IATI organisation identifier.

If the agency your organisation is registered with is not listed, please send the name and website address of the agency to: [email protected] . If you have the full information to submit a request for a new registration agency, you can create a proposal directly on Github. If all relevant information is provided on Github, the IATI Secretariat will then look into setting up a code for your registration agency.

There are numerous registration agencies, for example:

• Companies House in the UK. Its code is: GB-COH
• the Tanzania Revenue Authority in Tanzania. Its code is: TZ-TRA

Find your registration number

The second part of your IATI organisation identifier is the registration number your organisation has been given by its registration agency. This is normally found on your organisation’s registration certificate.

Add this after your registration agency’s code, separating the two with a hyphen (-). Write the registration number exactly as it appears on your organisation’s registration certificate.

Using the examples again:

• Companies House has given Development Initiatives the registration number: 06368740. This is added to the Companies House code to form the IATI organisation identifier: GB-COH-06368740
• The Tanzania Revenue Authority gives each organisation a registration certificate, which includes a Taxpayer Identification Number (e.g. 100-200-300). This is added to the Tanzania Revenue Authority’s code to form the IATI organisation identifier:
  TZ-TRA-100-200-300.

Please note:

• If your registration number contains any of the following symbols: / & | ? then these should be replaced with a - .
• Your organisation identifier should not start or end with a blank space or a new line.

Verify your IATI organisation identifier

Your identifer will be checked by the IATI Secretariat when you register your organisation as an IATI publisher. If your registration agency does not have a public list of all registered organisations, you will need to send a document with your registration number. Examples of acceptable documents include your registration certificate or a contract.
