This week, the IATI Executive Director, Yemesrach Assefa Workie addressed the United Nations’ Second Session of the Preparatory Committee for the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4).
Speaking on behalf of IATI, which is hosted by the United Nations Development Programme, Ms. Workie highlighted the pivotal role of IATI in advancing the transparency of development cooperation.
Launched at the 2008 Third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana, Ms. Workie said IATI:
- now has a membership of 107 organisations
- has tracked trillions of dollars in development spending from governments, multilateral development banks (MDBs), foundations, NGOs, and more
- has attracted over 1,700 organisations to publish IATI data
IATI for strengthening country ownership
The Executive Director spoke on the importance for IATI data to be leveraged for effective development cooperation at country level. She told the committee that IATI offered near real-time and forward-looking data and this was already being utilised by countries for national budgets, development cooperation reports and effective cooperation.
Calling for strengthened transparency commitment in FfD4 Outcome document
Ms. Workie highlighted that the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (the outcome document from the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in 2015) noted the effort of the International Aid Transparency Initiative (see AAAA para 127).
She called for the FfD4 Outcome Document to include a stronger commitment to transparency and mutual accountability of development financing by using the “tried and tested” open data standard of IATI.
Looking Ahead
As the process continues towards the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (Spain, 30 June – 3 July, 2025), IATI will continue to advocate for a commitment to transparent and effective development financing.
