IATI Annual Report 2024

The International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) has published its Annual Report 2024: Towards Better Open Data and Transparency, alongside the Financial Report 2024.

Together, these reports highlight the collective efforts of IATI’s members and wider community to promote open, accountable, and effective development and humanitarian action.

Making development and humanitarian action visible

Throughout 2024, IATI continued to expand the availability of open data on the resources and results of development and humanitarian activities. The volume and quality of data published during the year underscore IATI’s role as a trusted global data platform supporting better coordination and accountability.

Key figures from 2024 include:

  • USD 269 billion in disbursements and expenditure publish for 2024, and USD 147 billion in forward-looking budget data for 2025
  • 1,656 organisations publishing IATI data (an increase of 106 from the previous year)
  • 106,000+ humanitarian activities tracked (10% growth since 2023), 169,000+ SDG-tagged activities, and growing volumes of climate and gender data

This growing dataset is enabling governments, humanitarian agencies, and civil society organisations to make more informed decisions on the allocation and coordination of resources.

Demonstrating impact and use: IATI case studies

In 2024, IATI data supported efforts to track aid flows, inform national systems and strengthen analysis in response to humanitarian crises. Case studies featured in the report illustrate the value of open data and transparency:

  • In Nigeria, the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning launched a national Development Cooperation Dashboard powered by IATI data.
  • The Centre for Disaster Protection used IATI data and machine learning to track pre-arranged financing for disasters.
  • Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs piloted the use of IATI data to report humanitarian finance to UN OCHA’s Financial Tracking Service, to help reduce duplication and improve timeliness.
  • Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) launched the AusDevPortal, powered by IATI data, to enhance the transparency of Australia’s development cooperation.
  • CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean became a new IATI publisher, sharing detailed data on over 150 development activities across 14 countries, representing more than USD 5 billion in development finance.

Strengthening leadership, global reach and strategic direction

In 2024, IATI strengthened its leadership and broadened its global engagement.

In 2024, IATI strengthened its leadership and broadened its global engagement. The initiative held its Members’ Assembly and Community Exchange in Latin America for the first time, and convened a regional workshop in Nairobi, bringing together 48 stakeholders from across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

Leadership transitions during the year included the appointment of Yemesrach Assefa Workie as IATI’s first Executive Director, the election of a new Governing Board, and the addition of three new members: the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Government of Senegal, and Fields Data.

In the final quarter of the year, IATI launched a consultation process for its next Strategic Plan (2026–2030). Through in-person and virtual meetings, online discussions, and stakeholder interviews, the initiative began gathering input to help shape its future direction.

"IATI’s strength lies in our members—governments, multilaterals, civil society, and others—who continue to champion the transformative power of open data." — Thea Schepers, IATI Governing Board Chair

A community-driven initiative

Reflecting on the year’s progress, IATI Governing Board Chair Thea Schepers noted in her foreword:

“All of this work has one thing in common: our community. IATI’s strength lies in our members—governments, multilaterals, civil society, and others—who continue to champion the transformative power of open data.

"On behalf of the Governing Board, I extend my sincere thanks to every member and supporter who has contributed to IATI through their time, ideas, and resources. Your leadership matters, and it is making a difference.”
